Monday Musings

The New York Islanders signed goaltender Rick DiPietro to a 15-year, $67.5 million contract last week, hypothetically locking the 24-year-old up through 2021.

DiPietro's contract was so lucrative because it included future provisions for AARP membership fees.

Michigan soundly stomped Notre Dame's national title hopes this past weekend, pounding the Fighting Irish, 47-21.

Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis hasn't been this upset since the Red Lobster in South Bend closed its all-you-can-eat buffet.

Minnesota Vikings kicker Ryan Longwell threw a touchdown pass on a fake field goal in overtime to help his team to a win Sunday.

Immediately after the game, the Detroit Lions offered Longwell a 10-year contract to be their quarterback.

John L. Smith prepared MSU for the heat at last weekend's game by having his team practice indoors with the furnace on all week.

To get the Spartans ready for this week's game against Notre Dame, Smith said he plans on having reporters tap his players on the shoulder every five minutes in practice and ask, "Why do you think Brady Quinn is so great?"
