MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY FEDERAL CREDIT UNION

A federal credit union open to MSU students, alumni and employees

Services: Offers checking accounts, savings accounts, loans, mortgages, and VISA check or credit cards. Fee-free ATMs are located around campus and East Lansing.

POWERHOUSE GYM

Powerhouse offers an extremely beneficial workout package with state-of-the-art equipment so you and your friends can stay toned. Located: 435 E. Grand River Ave.

Services: Top-of-the-line resistance training, extensive free weights, aerobics classes, cycling, juice bar, cardio center, pro shop, supplements, member referral program and locker rental.

Cost: A 12-month membership is $49 down and $19 a month. Base pay for one year is $249, including one month of free, unlimited tanning and one month of personal training.

F.R.A.G. CENTER

Welcome to the gamer's paradise. Multiple top-of-the-line networked PCs ready for competitive play.

Location: 543 E. Grand River Ave. Services: You can have your computer fixed with the center's repair service or game it out with a total of 30 PCs set up with the industry's latest games. F.R.A.G. offers online, LAN and single player availability.

Costs: The F.R.A.G. Center offers a few payment plans for the casual to hard-core gamers. $4 an hour to begin, $20 for a 10-hour day pass (if you don't use the time, it carries over). $65 for a one-month pass, and a one-year membership costs $365. PC repairs are $69 for diagnostics and cleaning.

DOUGLAS J AVEDA INSTITUTE

You can get everything done at Douglas J. From hair and nails to the total spa treatment, you won't find a more complete salon.

Location: 331 E. Grand River Ave.

Services: Haircuts, styles, coloring, texturing, conditioning, skin revitalization, facials, waxing, makeup, pedicures, manicures, polish, paraffin treatments and spa packages. Whew.

Costs: Depends on customization and package. A haircut/style ranges costs $15 and up.

OLIN HEALTH CENTER

A medical center that offers health services for MSU students and staff.

Location: East Circle Drive between Berkey and Morrill halls.

Services: A wide variety of medical services are provided such as pharmacy, gynecology, dentistry, allergy and immunization, primary and urgent care, counseling and psychiatry, STD testing and health education.

Cost: For students enrolled in MSU classes the university will subsidize the first three office visits each year. Laboratory, X-ray, pharmacy, physical therapy, dentistry, medical supplies and medical/surgical procedures are provided on a fee-for-service basis.

DAIRY STORE

There's a reason why other schools deride MSU as "Moo U," but whatever, the freshly made treats at the Dairy Store are worth it.

Locations: 1140 South Anthony Hall and 107 Union.

Services: Provides a wide variety of dairy products, including 33 flavors of ice cream and five kinds of cheese.

Cost: Ice cream ranges from $1.49 for a junior scoop to $26.00 for a 3-gallon tub. Cheese is $4.80 per pound.

MSU MUSEUM

There are dinosaurs on campus! And they're at the MSU Museum, Michigan's largest public museum of natural history and culture.

Location: West Circle Drive across from the Main Library.

Long-term Exhibitions: Collections Connections, Habitat Hall, Hall of Animal Diversity, Hall of Evolution, Hall of World Cultures, Heritage Hall, Youth Art Gallery

Cost: Free

Hours: Sunday: 1-5 p.m., Monday through Friday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

OLD HORTICULTURE GARDENS

A lovely little spot favored by faculty, students and squirrels alike, with one of the best fountains on campus.

Location: Between Students Services, Natural Science and Old Horticulture.

Services: Relaxation, pretty much. A good place for a midday walk or just to stop and think.


HANNAH ADMINISTRATION BUILDING

Where Lou Anna K. Simon goes to work and where campus activists go to protest

Location: South of Olds Hall, west of the Computer Center

Departments or Offices in the Building: Administrative Information Services, Admissions and Scholarships, Contract and Grant Administration, Controller, MSU Board of Trustees, Office of the Registrar, President's Office, Provost's Office, University Curriculum and Catalog.


UNION

The social hub at the center of campus, built in 1925 as a memorial to U.S. soldiers killed in combat.

Location: Southeast corner of Abbott Entrance and Grand River Avenue.

Dining: Chow down at the new restaurants in One Union Square food court, Beaner's Gourmet Coffee, MSU Dairy Store or Heritage Cafe.

Shopping: Pick up your green and white at the Spartan Spirit Shop, prepare for graduation at Commencement Connection, or grab a magazine and a snack at the Union Central Store.

Entertainment: The U-Cue Billiard Room, Spartan Lanes bowling alley, the Union Ballroom

Services: MSUFCU ATM, barter and ride board, campus lost and found, U.S. Post Office, barber and styling services, computer lab

Departments in the Building: Alumni Association and the Student Alumni Foundation, MSU Women's Resource Center, The Multicultural Center of MSU.


DELIA KOO INTERNATIONAL ACADEMIC CENTER

Lives up to its name as the home of the Department of International Studies and the Office of Study Abroad. There's also the Crossroads Food Court and the Spartan Bookstore.

Location: West side of Erickson Hall on Shaw Lane

Other Departments and Offices in the Building: African Studies Center, Center for Advanced Study of International Development


IM SPORTS-WEST, -EAST AND -CIRCLE FITNESS CENTERS

The most comprehensive workout facility and intramural sports program on campus.

IM Sports-East, located south of East Shaw Lane, across from McDonel Hall.

Facilities: Two indoor gym areas, eight racquetball courts, volleyball nets, indoor running track, complete weight/fitness room, all-purpose/aerobics room, outdoor sand volleyball area, two outdoor basketball courts, large outdoor softball fields, full locker rooms, individual lockers w/key, equipment rental office.

IM Sports-West, located south of Red Cedar Road, west of Spartan Stadium.

Facilities: Seven basketball courts, 12 racquetball courts, four volleyball courts, six badminton courts, four squash courts, complete weight/fitness room, all-purpose turf arena, indoor pool, outdoor pool, judo room, karate room, full locker rooms, equipment rental office.

IM Sports-Circle, located in the corner of West Circle Drive and Kalamazoo Street.

Facilities: Two indoor gym areas, two dance studios, badminton courts, aerobics room, indoor pool, full locker rooms, individual lockers w/key, equipment rental office

Cost: Dependent on status, time and desired activity

BEAL BOTANICAL GARDENS

A five-acre outdoor laboratory with more than 5,000 diverse plants. Established in 1873, Beal Gardens are the longest continuously worked university botanical garden in the U.S.

Location: Between West Circle Drive and the Red Cedar River, west of the Main Library.

Collections on site: Forest communities, economic plant, endangered and threatened, wetland, plant families, landscape plant, and non-flowering vascular plants

KRESGE ART MUSEUM

Founded in 1959, Kresge Art Museum displays art spanning 5,000 years with a collection of more than 7,000 pieces. Audio tours for both children and adults are available for the permanent collection.

Location: South of Physics Road, East of the Auditorium.

Hours: Monday - Friday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Thursday 10 a.m. - 8 p.m., Saturday and Sunday noon - 5 p.m.

BAKER WOODLOT (RACHANA RAJENDRA NEOTROPICAL MIGRANT BIRD SANCTUARY)

Covering an area of 78 acres, Baker Woodlot is most closely associated to a Beech-Maple forest.

Location: On Farm Lane, west of the Clinical Center

Cost: Free

Hours: The woods don't close.


KELLOGG HOTEL & CONFERENCE CENTER

A four-star hotel with 160 guest rooms and suites that includes a 1,000-space parking garage. Kellogg offers three fine dining choices at either The State Room, KC's Lounge or the Coffee Bar.

COMPUTER CENTER

Answers behind the many mysteries concerning computers and networking at MSU.

Location: Room 120 in the Computer Center building, east of Hannah Administration Building, north of the Red Cedar River

ASMSU (ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY)

Free legal advice and interest-free loans for MSU students. The organization's main purpose is to improve undergraduate life at MSU.

Location: Room 307 in the Student Services building, east end of East Circle Drive.

Services: Legal, loans, yearbook, events, funding, blue books, copies/faxes, representation.
