Dogs on Display

4-H member Rebecca Vacha helps her Pomeranian, Christian, practice sitting before the Pre-Novice B obedience competition. "I have been training with Christian for almost two years," Vacha said. "This is his first time competing in obedience." Once in the ring, the pair was judged on how well the dog listened to commands, such as "stay," "heel" and "sit." Vacha and Christian did not take home first place, but they were given an honorable mention for the high marks they received during the competition.

Dogs from all over Michigan followed their owners to the State 4-H Dog Show to compete for titles in agility, obedience and showmanship on Saturday.

The dog show took place at the Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education and was open to 4-H members ages 9-19 with up to two of their dogs.

The agility classes were the first to begin at 8 a.m. as the dogs jumped, crawled and balanced their way through the obstacle course. Owners led and encouraged their dogs while judges watched.

The obedience competition followed, during which the dogs tested their patience and understanding of direction. Judges gave out commands, such as "sit" and "stay."

The last competition of the day was Junior Showmanship. Dogs were primped and prepared before being brought into the ring to walk, stand and pose for the judges, who inspected their stance, look and feel.
