Correction: The quote "ASMSU adds student tailgating pass" should have explained the "special line" was not for parking lot spaces but parking permit pickup at IM Sports-West.
A new permit system is designed to make it easier for students to acquire parking spots for tailgating.
This new seasonal pass, which won't be available for this weekend's game, will allow some students to be able to tailgate during the football season without having to enter a lottery or pay a fee every week.
"The hardest part about the last year and a half has been the students getting used to the implementation of change," said Julielyn Gibbons, vice chairwoman of External Affairs for ASMSU's Student Assembly.
"We are putting aside 100 seasonal passes for students that want them," Gibbons said. "The way this works is you go to www.tailgate.asmsu.msu.edu and submit your name into a lottery, which begins next week, and that person will be sent an e-mail if they have received a pass."
There is a $90 fee for the pass, which includes all the games, but the students would still have to pick up the pass for every home game.
After students pay this, they will no longer have to pay the fee or submit their name into a lottery for single-game passes, which will still be available for those who do not receive a season pass.
"The people who get this pass will be allowed to wait in a special line allowing them to get into tailgate faster," Gibbons said. "It's kind of like waiting in line at an airport; the people in first-class get in a little faster, and this is in a similar fashion."
Dan Fox, a no-preference junior who tailgated last year and will be tailgating this year, said he is very excited for this pass.
"I am very interested in the pass and like the idea of not having to worry about joining a lottery every week," Fox said.
Since 2004, university officials have put together a set of rules to keep the atmosphere safe but fun at the same time, Gibbons said.
"There will be games held by intramural sports, a DJ will be present, and IM Sports and athletics will be giving away prizes," Gibbons said.
No drinking games will be allowed on campus, and students must now register their cars before tailgating.
Fox said even with the limits placed on tailgating last year, he and his friends still seemed to have a good time.
"There was never a time when I thought the rules got in the way of having a good time," Fox said.
Because the rules became more strict, many greek organizations tailgate off campus, Gibbons said.
Alex Richnak, a packaging senior with Beta Theta Pi tailgates with his fraternity brothers at one of their houses, said he hopes to see things stay just the way they are.
"With the past issues on campus with tailgating at places like the rock (on Farm Lane), I think the greek community would much rather tailgate off campus," Richnak said.
