Student waives his preliminary hearing

June 12, 2006

MSU student Jason William Trew, accused of stealing at least 35 data projectors, waived his preliminary examination Friday at the 54-B District Court. Trew's case will now be transferred to the Ingham County Circuit Court with a tentative June 21 court appearance.

Michael Maddaloni, Trew's defense attorney, said the telecommunication, information studies and media junior turned himself in May 26 after a warrant was put out for his arrest the day before. He pleaded not guilty to criminal enterprise — a felony punishable with a sentence of up to 20 years — at his arraignment held the same day.

Maddaloni said June 1 that Trew has cooperated with police in order to reclaim the projectors. Trew denied being arrested near Bessey Hall for possession of burglary tools, which was stated in a press release from the MSU police on May 30.

Maddaloni had no further comments Friday about his client's case.
