Simon addresses campus, city communication

June 8, 2006

Teaching students to act responsibly and increasing the university's impact on the local economy were the focus of MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon's third meeting with East Lansing residents on Wednesday.

Striving to increase communication between the campus and city, Simon has met twice with residents since late May.

Residents, concerned about the behavior of students once they leave the dorms, said they wanted some way to know the university is making sure students know how to behave in a neighborhood setting.

"We don't do a very good job of talking about the transition when you leave the residence halls and join the community," Simon said. "We've got a lot of work to do."

A video about acting responsibly while away from home will be shown to incoming students during the Academic Orientation Program. Simon also mentioned the possibility of sending a letter from her and East Lansing Mayor Sam Singh to the homes of incoming freshmen.

But student behavior wasn't the only issue that was discussed.

Simon once again mentioned a study is being conducted to determine the economic significance of the university.

"We are taking a look at our part on how we impact the economy throughout the state," Simon said, adding that the study will be released at some point "soon."

Using all of MSU's resources to bring people into the area and make new discoveries can ensure economic success, Simon said.

"We are trying to expand beyond our agriculture roots," she said.

Simon also said she and the MSU Board of Trustees are working to make sure there's a public-approval process for developments and other projects.

"We need to do our part to make the university more transparent," she said.

The meetings help to bridge the gap between residents of East Lansing and the university, Singh said.

"We are trying to open up a dialogue with these community forums," Singh said. "I am very pleased Dr. Simon could be here."
