Magdalena's Tea House

May 24, 2006
Indigo Fossum, right, 14, takes a break from making tea for guests by relaxing with Lansing Community College student Greg Williams, left, a fellow volunteer at Magdalena's Tea House, 2006 E. Michigan Ave. in Lansing. Fossum volunteers behind the counter for her mother, Miko Fossum, but makes tips for serving menu items, ranging from orange hummus to veggie burgers. She even created her own sandwich, which she calls the "Indi," a grilled cheese with pesto, spices and tomato.

Magdalena's Tea House is a magic carpet ride away from Lansing's characteristic hustle. With its mellow atmosphere, spontaneous acoustic jams and Turkish decor, Magdalena's allows patrons to unwind and relax at their leisure.

The sign at the door reads, "Please remove your shoes." The walls are covered with colorful tapestries. The air is heavy with the smell of spices and tea.

Owner Miko Fossum bills the business, opened in July 2004, as a "community space," or a place where all people are welcome. She said her cafe is an open space for all artists to engage in their crafts.

Entertainment most nights at the tea house ranges from open drum circles to concerts.

Magdalena's, 2006 E. Michigan Ave., is two miles west of campus.
