A 19-year-old East Lansing resident was arraigned Wednesday for first-degree home invasion after he was arrested Tuesday for stealing nearly $700 in items from an East Akers Hall dorm room, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.Jesse Charles Young could face a maximum 20-year prison sentence and $5,000 fine. Two students reported that Young entered their room at about 9:10 a.m. Tuesday. The students reported Young said he was picking something up for someone, but the resident said that person was not in the room. The students reported Young went into the living area and then left their room carrying a resident's backpack, McGlothian-Taylor said. The students called 911 and went after Young, who got onto a bus. Police arrived on the scene just as the bus was driving away, so they pulled the bus over and made Young get off the bus. Young said the backpack was his and allowed officers to search it, McGlothian-Taylor said. The bag contained items belonging to the two residents, as well as a wallet belonging to the person for whom Young reportedly said he was picking something up.An 18-year-old female student reported an 18-year-old male student groped her while she was sleeping in her Armstrong Hall dorm room between 1:30 and 6 a.m. April 7, McGlothian-Taylor said. The woman is pressing charges for fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct, which involves sexual contact and a circumstance such as using force or coercion, among others. The man was staying the night with the woman's roommate, but sometime in the morning, the woman reported she woke up to the man touching her, McGlothian-Taylor said. She moved away from the man and fell asleep. The woman reported that the man touched her again later. She reported she pushed his hand away and told him to stop, which he did. At 8 a.m., the woman kicked the man out of the room and said he appeared to be intoxicated. The man told police he did not grope the woman. The woman's roommate reported the man tried to have sex with her but she said "no." After that, she went to sleep and doesn't remember if anything else happened. She does not want to press charges, McGlothian-Taylor said. The cases are being sent to the Ingham County Prosecutor's Office.Melissa Domsic
