Writer should have sense to be logical

In response to Joseph Ryzyi's "Sick of Bice; want anything but religion" (SN 3/23), I'm disappointed. The letter was three paragraphs on how much he detests those who speak out against religion. Like you, Ryzyi, "we get it."

I'm disappointed because I would have thought that after having almost completed the political theory and constitutional democracy curriculum, he wouldn't write a letter like that.

If someone told me (before I read Ryzyi's letter) that a student with that major had written a criticism of John Bice, I would have guessed it would be on the dangers of anti-religious sentiment, observations on the defining role of religion in culture, a discussion of the importance of "divine" moral grounding or an argument for the significance of religion as an institution. These all would have made interesting letters and good counterpoints to Bice's secular perspective.

He provided us with none of these. Instead, we were treated to an ad homonym attack on a newspaper columnist who was exercising his first amendment rights on an opinion page.

Your zealotry, Ryzyi — exactly what Bice is protesting — is belied by your argument's lack of logical merit. Next time you want to make a point, do Bice the courtesy of responding to logic with logic, and construct a real argument.

As far as telling Bice to go to church to "receive some enlightenment;" you can't have been paying much attention these last four years if you think church is the only place to do that.
