Spring forward

With the end of the winter sports season, it's time to turn your focus to spring. Get yourself familiarized with what you've missed so far

Baseball

Head coach: David Grewe, first year

Record: 9-9

Last game: 14-5 win over Grand Valley State

Next home game: 3 p.m. today against Indiana at Oldsmobile Park in Lansing

Pitching leader: Jeff Gerbe — 2-2, 2.56 ERA, 14 strikeouts, 31.2 IP and one complete game

Hitting leaders: Troy Krider — .394 batting average, five RBI, 16 runs scored; Jamey Embree — .370 batting average, two home runs and 12 RBI


Softball

Head coach: Jacquie Joseph, 13th year

Record: 20-10

Last games: Swept doubleheader vs. IPFW, 13-2 and 7-0

Next home game: 4 p.m. today against Minnesota

Pitching leaders: Lesley Noel — 5-3, 1.02 ERA, 4 complete games, 3 shutouts, 54.2 IP; Rachel Turney — 9-5, 1.95 ERA, 11 complete games, 2 shutouts, 97 IP, 84 strikeouts

Hitting leaders: Nikki Nicosia — .354 batting average, one home run, 12 RBI, 18 runs scored; Dayna Feenstra — .323 batting average, six home runs, 27 RBI, 11 doubles


Women's golf

Head coach: Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll, ninth year

Next event: Northwestern Invitational in Rancho Mirage, Calif., all day April 3-4

Sophomore Sara Brown leads the team in top-five finishes with two, with her best finish a tie for third place in the Lady Paladin Invitational.


Men's golf

Head coach: Mark Hankins, seventh year

Next home event: Fossum/Taylor Made Invitational all day April 22-23

Junior Matt Harmon has the most top-five finishes with three, including a first-place finish at the EZ-GO Schenkel Invitational, which was his first career individual title. He shot a 9-under-par 207.


Men's tennis

Head coach: Gene Orlando, 15th year

Record: 6-11, 0-0 Big Ten

Next home matches: at noon Saturday against Iowa and at noon Sunday against Minnesota

The Spartans are coming off sweep last weekend: A 7-0 blanking of Cleveland State and a 4-3 victory against Butler.

TOP PAIR: Sophomores Nick Rinks and Adam Monich pair up at No. 1 doubles and Rinks also is the No. 1 singles player.


Women's tennis

Head coach: Tim Bauer, eighth year

Record: 10-5, 1-2 Big Ten

Next home matches: April 8 against Illinois at 10 a.m. and April 9 against Purdue at 10 a.m.

MSU recorded its first conference win against Wisconsin, 5-2.

TOP PAIR: Sophomore Christine Bader and junior Sarah Andrews compete in the No. 1 doubles competition. Bader also competes at the No. 1 singles.


Men's track and field

Interim head coach: Walt Drenth, second year

This weekend, MSU travels to Palo Alto, Calif., to compete in the Stanford Invitational.

SO FAR: The Spartans opened the outdoor season last weekend in the Arizona State Invitational. Senior Julien Williams leaped to second place in the long jump. Also placing in the top 10 were senior Jon Wojcik, who came in fourth in the 800-meter dash, and junior Jim Pancoast, who was sixth.


Women's track and field

Head coach: Angela Goodman, eighth year

The Spartans open the outdoor season this weekend in Palo Alto, Calif., at the Stanford Invitational.

SO FAR: At the Big Ten Indoor Championships, sophomore Nicole Bush came in fifth in the 5,000-meter run with a 16:32.71 time. Senior Aimee Keenan finished ninth in the 800 meters, and sophomore Jackie Walton was eighth in the 60-meter hurdles.
