MSU to totally change takeout

February 16, 2006
Students grab a quick lunch at Totally Takeout in Wilson Hall. "The students like the choices we have," said food service manager Anita Sandel said.

Totally Takeout will continue to be an option for students this fall, but officials are looking to give the program a makeover by fall 2007.

University officials aren't happy with students using Totally Takeout to stock their refrigerators.

Instead they want to help students who need a quick meal on the fly.

The program could be tweaked to include more meals instead of separate food items.

The meal option will be used as a replacement option for students on the go, said MSU Food Services Coordinator Bruce Haskell.

"Students will be able to choose packages," Haskell said. "It will be limited to once a day. We haven't made any definite changes."

When Totally Takeout was Caf-II-Go, it included hot meal items students could take with them, said Kevin Newman, president of the Residence Halls Association.

"My guess is that it will go back to something like that," Newman said.

Haskell said administrators are considering whether to have students make subs or maybe even salads to order, or having already-made subs for students to grab on the run. Students also might be able to choose chips or fruit and a drink.

Angela Brown, director of University Housing, said officials took another look at Totally Takeout after planning to remove the program.

"We want it to be used the way it was intended, not as a snack shop," Brown said.

Brown said when extended hours begin for the cafeterias in 2007, most students should not need Totally Takeout as much.

"We encourage students to use the main dining room and leave Totally Takeout for students with class or work conflicts," Brown said. "We are looking to add more substantial items."

Newman said RHA was concerned about students who have legitimate reasons to use Totally Takeout.

"Students will be happy to know RHA fought hard for them to have something," Newman said. "They will be happy to have something instead of nothing."

Elementary education junior Nikia Curry said she doesn't agree with University Housing limiting how students can use Totally Takeout.

"There is enough restrictions in the cafeteria," Curry said. "People should have the freedom to take whatever they want from (Totally Takeout). They're paying for it. If they want 12 milks, they should be able to take 12 milks."

Newman said University Housing would lose too much money keeping the program the way it's being run and believes this is a good compromise for students.

"I don't think students will want to pay more or see a drop in other services," Newman said.

"All meal plans are going to be unlimited and they will add Sparty Cash or meal tickets for their friends without meal plans to eat with them," Newman said.

"Students will get a chance to enjoy late-night meals they would normally order and pay money for in the cafeterias until midnight beginning with the extended hours."

Curry said the longer hours in the cafeteria are good. but they shouldn't affect Totally Takeout.

"It shouldn't be modeled after the caf," Curry said, adding that if any changes should be made to Totally Takeout, they should include a bigger selection.
