Monday musings

January 23, 2006

• The MSU women's basketball team lost a heartbreaker Sunday when Ohio State's Jessica Davenport made a layup with less than a second left.

Just saying — this probably wouldn't have happened if we had gotten the timekeeper from the 2001 MSU-Michigan football game to work this one.

• The student who portrays the Northwestern State mascot, Vic the Demon, is recovering from a game injury suffered when a pep band member ran over him.

When is this kind of abuse going to stop, America? Mascots are people, too. Big, goofy-looking, oversized-headed people.

• The last three unbeaten teams in college basketball — Duke, Florida and Pittsburgh — were all handed their first loss on Saturday.

Don't worry, guys. At least you lasted longer than 'Emily's Reasons Why Not.'

• North Dakota State, an independent school in its first season as a Division I program, stunned the No. 13 Wisconsin men's basketball team 62-55 in Madison, Wis., on Saturday — the biggest win in the history of the tiny Fargo-based school.

When asked what he would remember most about his team's magical afternoon in the Kohl Center, a teary-eyed North Dakota State coach replied, "They had indoor plumbing."

• According to ESPN.com, the Boston Red Sox are reportedly close to obtaining Cleveland Indians outfielder Coco Crisp via trade.

Sources say the Red Sox also are completing a three-way deal that would net them Count Chocula and Cap'n Crunch, send Toucan Sam and the Trix Rabbit to the Orioles and give the Mets a heart, star, horseshoe, clover or blue moon to be named later.
