Critic shouldn't just complain, volunteer

As an MSU senior that listens to WDBM (88.9-FM), or the Impact, quite often, I would like to voice my opinion in response to Ryan McCormick's column "Local radio needs diversity" (SN 1/12) about the music on the radio in Lansing.

Although I agree that in a perfect world there would be hundreds of different genres on the radio in each city — such a reality is obviously unrealistic.

However, I feel that the Impact is one of the stations whose music is extremely diverse, playing retro, hip-hop, jazz, blues and twang music, as well as the only station playing local music.

As for the DJs, most are volunteers who dedicate their time for free in order to help provide students with interesting talk shows and great music. It is getting tiring to read all of The State News content time after time criticizing the efforts of the Impact.

I would just like to remind The State News that the Impact is Michigan's college station of the year and that anyone who has a problem with its production should perhaps volunteer their time at the station and become an active contributor rather than being an idle critic.
