The master plan

November 1, 2005

Over time the East Village area has gained a reputation for rowdy celebrations and its controversial blighted designation. But city officials are envisioning future economic prosperity in the area.

For Lori Mullins, East Lansing senior project manager, the plan still has to make its way through the approval process.

"There could be revisions to the master plan," said Mullins, pictured with a sketch of what the corner of Grand River Avenue and Bogue Street could look like.

The plan includes creating a mix of retail and office space as well as owner-occupied and rental properties — inviting students, young professionals, empty nesters and alumni to live together. A boat basin, amphitheater and riverfront walkway are also listed as ideas.

After talking to several groups around East Lansing, Mullins said many are in support of the plan because they feel the improvement will be beneficial to the city.

The city has its vision. It could still be changed, but it's up to the East Lansing City Council during the next decade to stick to the plan and make the tough decisions, and it's up to their constituents to impact what they decide, Mullins said.

"That all depends on the interest of property owners and developers to make changes there," Mullins said.
