Sox success irks Cubs fan

The baseball season was supposed to bring joy to me this year.

This was the year the Cubs were supposed to win it all.

Oh, wait.

That's every year.

Unfortunately though, this year is turning out to be the worst possible season ever. The Chicago White Sox are on their way to winning the World Series. And if the Cubs aren't going to win it all, then the White Sox better not, either.

All the talk is about how the White Sox are Chicago's second team. Everyone keeps saying how this is the chance for the White Sox to get out of the Cubs' shadow.

I've got news for all you White Sox fans, though. The Sox will never leave the shadows of the Cubs.

The Cubs will always be the favored team in Chicago. It is just a known fact that Chicago has more love for the Cubs than the Sox. As a matter of fact, the country has more love for the Cubs and I wouldn't be surprised if most of the country wants the Astros to win the Series this year.

My big problem now is dealing with all of the Sox fans who know I am a Cubs fan. Everyone keeps asking me, "Don't you want Chicago to win?"

And the answer to that is yes. I always want Chicago teams to win, except for when the "Chicago" is followed by "White Sox." I will never cheer for them.

It was funny. The World Series started on Saturday. On that same day, two different movie channels were showing, "Eight Men Out."

This movie is based on an actual event, when the 1919 Chicago White Sox were accused of throwing the World Series. Pretty funny if you ask me. The bad thing here is that if the Sox win the series this year, everyone will most likely forget about that team and remember this one for a long time to come.

Steroids were something else that hit center stage during the season. After the congressional hearings that were held concerning steroids and all the players that were questioned and stood by not taking steroids, there were still problems.

The biggest name to come up dirty was Rafael Palmeiro. About three quarters of the way through the season it came out that he tested positive for steroids.

The problem I have here is that it seemed as though baseball might have covered this up for most of the season. Palmeiro was on his way to collecting hit number 3,000 and then two weeks after he gets it, this news breaks and he gets suspended. Something tells me that baseball was trying to save the moment for him.

Either way, Palmeiro's name and achievements were tarnished when this happened. He is still a great player, but when his career is remembered, everyone is going to say, "Well, he tested positive for steroids."

There were numerous other players who were also suspended for testing positive. This is something that is going to need to be addressed in the upcoming years if people want to clean up the sport.

But this season also saw some pretty amazing things happen, none bigger than the Houston Astros. This was a team that was left for dead early in the year after it had problems winning games. Everyone just figured the team would pack it in and get ready for next year.

That's what is so great about baseball, though.

Fifty games aren't enough to lose a season. There are 162 games and 50 of them do not make or break a team's season. The Astros turned things around in a big way, and for the first time in the franchise's history they have made it to the World Series.

Now if they can just come through for Chicago and win it all.

Chris Barsotti is hoping for a White Sox loss in the World Series. Reach him at barsott1@msu.edu.
