Give me a break!
I enjoy reading about potential government conspiracies or paranoia about "Big Brother" in "Digital spying" (SN 10/24) taking away our freedom. I, for one, can allow small amounts of my privacy to be compromised if it means strengthening the federal government's ability to catch a "bad guy."
Honestly, who believes that something like this will ever lead to the government censoring any of your ideas? I think people believe they are more important than they really are and the U.S. government gives a damn what John Doe e-mails Cindy Smith about. So long as a student isn't making plans to blow up the business school, then I really don't think the government has the time to read about the juicy date you e-mailed your friend about or the calculus homework that is due next week.
If anyone feels that they've been a victim of this policy, I'm sure the good old American Civil Liberties Union would be more than happy to blow this out of proportion.
