Lower pad level brings confidence

October 14, 2005
MSU sophomore running back Jehuu Caulcrick runs into the back of junior offensive guard Kyle Cook as he carries the ball against Notre Dame on Sept. 17 at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Ind. He rushed seven times for 19 yards in the Spartans' 44-41 overtime victory.

Sophomore running back Jehuu Caulcrick has rushed for 355 yards and four touchdowns this season. He averages 6.1 yards per carry.

The Spartans arguably have one of the best running back trios in the nation with Caulcrick, freshman Javon Ringer and senior Jason Teague leading the way.

The Findlay Lake, N.Y. native spent some time Monday to talk to the media about his season and the upcoming game at Ohio State.

Question: Do you guys feel like you've responded the way you wanted to after the loss to Michigan?
Jehuu Caulcrick: Definitely. We've matured a lot from last year to this year's loss. We put that behind us and we're just looking at Ohio State.

SN: Going up against a defense like Ohio State's, how important is it to get that running game going?
JC: It's very important. You get the running game going against any team, especially a team like Ohio State, with their best defense in the country, so that's something we have to establish and get it going early.

Q: As an offensive unit, are you excited to go up against such a highly ranked defense?
JC: Oh yeah, very excited about it. Going against the defensive line, and the linebackers, (A.J.) Hawk and all those guys. There's excitement in the locker room for all of us, we're looking forward to the challenge.

Q: Where have you seen the most improvement in your game as the season has progressed?
JC: It's my pad level. This year I'm running with a lower pad level than I did last year and I'm running with more confidence.
