Take a peek behind the curtain and test drive the NEW StateNews.com today!

Word on the street

"Commander in Chief," a new show that premieres at 9 p.m. on ABC, stars Geena Davis as the vice president of the United States who takes office when the president dies. Considering television's impact on popular culture - and with women in real life being bandied about as viable presidential candidates, such as Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice - The State News asks: Is the world ready for a female president?

"I think it could happen, but people would make a big deal out of it, for good or bad. Probably more for bad."

Amber Gooden

"Sounds like a good idea. As we move towards a more progressive era, it seems women are taking on a more dominant role in politics. I have no problem with it."

Nick Lekovish
finance sophomore

"Not quite yet. It's too male-oriented right now. There's too much male power, no room for women right now. Maybe in 10 years."

Mary Botz
business owner from Monroe

"I think so, we need some fashion these days. Some honesty, loyalty. And I'm getting tired of looking at a man. We need to look at a beautiful woman."

Benjamin Faulk
25, employee at Dick's Sporting Goods

"It's about time. To begin with, women have a lot of equality. Women here have more freedom than many other places. I'm surprised it hasn't happened here yet."

Sonia Manjeshwar
retailing graduate student
