Deli sells tradition

September 27, 2005
Chris VanSlyke, Haslett resident and owner of Botticelli's Legendary N.Y. Style Deli, 2090 W. Grand River Ave., in Okemos, said he is most proud of the corned beef and pizza at the deli because both are homemade.

Business: Botticelli's Legendary N.Y. Style Deli, 2090 W. Grand River Ave. in Okemos

Name: Chris VanSlyke, owner

Age: 32

Time with restaurant: Nine months

Education: He graduated from Old Dominion University as a business major with a culinary arts minor.

Background: He grew up in the restaurant business as his father owned restaurants.

Story behind the name: Botticelli is VanSlyke's stepfather's mother's maiden name. It went together with the deli since it rhymes, he said. He grew up in an Italian family, and the name went hand and hand.

How he got into sandwiches: VanSlyke said he sat down and thought about what this area needed and decided that it needed a real deli.

What makes his sandwiches different: The sandwiches have a New York style because they are stacked high with meat, he said. VanSlyke claims they also have the best corned beef in town.

Ups of the business: VanSlyke said he gets a chance to meet different people and see the business grow.

Downs of the business: He said he doesn't have enough clientele and finds it hard to keep building the business when there is downtime such as students leaving for summer.

Clientele: Both students and families and some business catering.

Running and working the deli: It consists of long days every day of the week but he does have help.

Story behind sandwich names: The names including "The Don," "The Work of Art" and "The Brooklyn Bomber" are tied in with the Italian New York theme. These are names VanSlyke came up with after sitting down with coworkers.
