Student government leaders at MSU

Physics senor Andrew Schepers, left, leads ASMSU during a meeting on April 21.

High school student governments might promise additional vending machines in the cafeteria and new equipment for the football team.

MSU adapted an adjusted version of a student government with the Associated Students of Michigan State University, better known as ASMSU.

MSU's undergraduate student government is divided into two major subgroups: Academic Assembly and Student Assembly.

According to ASMSU's Web site, "The Academic Assembly represents the undergraduate student body on academic issues including curriculum, faculty issues and tuition costs."

The Web site also states, "The Student Assembly serves the undergraduate student body by monitoring how 96.5 percent of student tax dollars are spent."

"ASMSU positively affects students by giving back to students," Association Director Jason Bucholz said.

"We take taxes from students, so it's important we give back through events. We give students what they want, like entertainment on campus."

Student Assembly oversees two major subgroups, Funding Board and Programming Board.

The Funding Board is responsible for overseeing finances, allocating money for different programs and budgeting current account resources.

The Programming Board is responsible for setting up an agenda of events for ASMSU and obtaining finances to promote those events by presenting budget ideas to the rest of Student Assembly.

ASMSU is funded through student taxes and provides many services to all MSU students. These services include short-term loans, cheap copies, free blue books and legal services.

Undergraduate students automatically become a member of ASMSU when they are registered for classes.

Once students are registered, they become eligible for all the services ASMSU provides and have the opportunity to participate in any assemblies, boards or departments and the ability to attend all sponsored programs, events or activities.

Both the Academic Assembly and the Student Assembly direct the central staff.

This executive cabinet provides administrative support to ASMSU.
