MSU Board of Trustees

Their reaction to Saturday's civil disturbance

Trustee Joel Ferguson

"I don't find any excuse for any aggressive police behavior based on what kids did a long time ago. But if police are under a direct assault, then they have to react."

Trustee Melanie Foster

"The vast majority of students were acting responsibly, and I understand certainly that the people, especially the young people, want to celebrate and have a good time, and it's unfortunate that possibly a few people spoiled the festivities for the vast majority. I am aware that some students were sprayed with tear gas that were not behaving irresponsibly, which is unfortunate."

Trustee Dorothy Gonzales

"I was just really disappointed and concerned. But when these things happen I always think of the safety of the students and the people. That kind of behavior is just unacceptable. They're old enough to be here on campus - they should just really look at the whole issue of what can happen if someone gets seriously hurt."

Trustee Scott Romney

"Most students in the university I'm sure handled themselves with dignity and respect the way that they should, but some of those involved in this event obviously did not. I think it's disappointing that some students didn't handle themselves responsibly and they should be dealt with appropriately."

Trustee Colleen McNamara

"It's been very interesting to hear all the different points of view. At this point, I'm hoping by (Friday's Board of Trustees meeting) the administration will have sorted out what they think has happened."
