Open alcohol ban good proposition

Monday, Nate Matatall made flagrant statements in a mild attempt to rile MSU students regarding the recent alcohol clarification ("Alcohol ban could have bad results" SN 1/24). However, it is clear that it's not a concern of ours. He mentioned the idea of this campus "in flames" as the only time the Board of Trustees will listen. The threat of violence, vandalism and rioting is completely unfounded. According to Olin Health Center data from the Student Academic Life Survey on Attitudes, 98 percent of MSU students disapprove of riot participation and 99 percent disapprove of vandalism acts.

With a desire for student opinion, a meeting held Wednesday for students and officials to discuss the issue had one student attend. This lackadaisical feeling is not a mere showing of students who no longer care about their campus, but a simple statement of maturity. Our campus has grown tired of disrespect, as well as the unsafe conditions we allow ourselves to be placed in. We are the only Big Ten campus to allow open-alcohol containers outdoors on campus outside of special occasions.

Finally, addressing the question, "What should we do to help with alcohol abuse/violence?" Get involved. Currently, Olin Health Center has a poster/advertisement campaign dealing with alcohol and other drugs. Residence Halls Association is in the planning stages of a sexual assault campaign, and there are many more projects out there. If you are so passionate and outraged by what is going on, stand up.
