Singers, actors and dancers will all take the stage to showcase their talents and display the Latin culture on Saturday at the Auditorium for Latin Xplosion, the ninth annual Chicano/Latino talent show.
Latin Xplosion showcases creative waves of multicultural entertainment on MSU's campus and within the East Lansing community. The show is sponsored by the Office of the Provost, Culturas de las Razas Unidas, ASMSU and the Office of Racial Ethnic Student Affairs.
Many performers will be wearing traditional Aztec-inspired costumes to honor the show's theme, "Nuestras Raices," or "Our Roots."
Rotasha Wardlaw, who's on the Latin Xplosion committee, said Nuestras Raices is about going deeper than the surface of the Latin culture and celebrating the Americas' indigenous cultures before Spanish settlement.
Wardlaw said the show will help people get an informal view of different cultures.
"It's not like just sitting in class," Wardlaw said. "You're learning about it while seeing someone perform."
Latin Xplosion committee member Ricardo Leon said the event is a way to invite other communities to experience the Latin culture.
"People felt there wasn't really another place for Latinos to showcase their talents," Leon said. "We have so many talented people in our community, and it's important to teach people about our culture."
International relations junior Roxanne Franco, who has been practicing a Tex-Mex group dance routine for Latin Xplosion, said she always enjoys watching participants perform cultural songs and dances at the show.
"It's inspirational," Franco said. "There's a lot of people there who have a lot of energy."
