Here are some of the events scheduled on campus to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day:
Today
8 p.m.: "Showtyme at MSU," a student talent contest in the Union ballroom. Admission is free, participation is open to all MSU students and there is a cash prize.
Sunday
3 p.m. and 7 p.m.: "Jazz: Spirituals, Prayer and Protest," featuring the MSU Jazz Band and the MSU Wind Symphony in the Pasant Theatre of Wharton Center. The performance will feature patriotic jazz performances, including a jazz rendition of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On." Free tickets can be picked up at Wharton Center box office.
Monday
9:15 a.m.: "Into the Streets," a student-run volunteering organization, will hold its annual service project day. Volunteers choose an activity and spend their day off helping others. Meet in N-130 Business College Complex.
10 a.m.-3:30 p.m.: "Hear Our Voice: Student Activists Expressing Dr. King's Legacy" A conference and resource fair with speakers and workshop sessions. MSU Union. Free to public.
11:30 a.m.-2 p.m.: "Communication Across Diverse Social Styles." The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the College of Veterinary Medicine present Frances E. Kendall in room 213 of the Veterinary Medical Center to discuss social styles and effective communication. Admission is free.
12:10 p.m., 12:30 p.m. and 1-4 p.m.: The Kresge Art Museum offers a tour of their African Collection, a tour of work by black artists and a film festival in 108 Kresge Art Center. The exhibit runs through Feb. 3. Admission to the museum and all events is free.
3:30-5:30 p.m.: The College of Human Medicine presents guest speaker Dr. Jordan J. Cohen in A-133 Life Sciences Building. Cohen heads the American Association of Medical Colleges and is a graduate of Yale University and Harvard Medical School.
4-6:15 p.m.: "Celebrating a Global Community" dinner in the dining room of Akers Hall. Free to anyone with an MSU ID, but online registration is required at msu.edu/unit/aacm/mlk/dinner-registration.html.
6 p.m.: MSU students and community members depart for the traditional march to Wharton Center. Meet at Beaumont Tower at 6 p.m. or Akers Hall at 6:15 p.m.
7 p.m.: A commemorative convocation begins in the Great Hall of Wharton Center, featuring a preview of the James Baldwin play "Blues for Mr. Charlie," presented by the MSU Department of Theatre and a discussion. Admission is free.
Tuesday
12-1 p.m.: The College of Osteopathic Medicine hosts Dr. Lewin Wyatt in E-105 Fee Hall. Wyatt, president of the Michigan Osteopathic Association, discusses pre- and post-civil rights in his speech, "What Happened to the Dream?"
Wednesday
9-11 p.m.: James Madison College and the International Studies and Programs will host an open mic event at Club Spartan on the third floor of Case Hall.
Thursday
11:45 a.m.- 1 p.m.: The International Center features two speakers on the third floor. David Wiley, sociology professor and director of MSU's African Studies Center and Robert Green, who worked alongside Martin Luther King Jr. in the 1960s, will both discuss "MLK and MSU: A Shared International Vision?"
11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.: The College of Nursing and Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition invites everyone to attend "One Man's Burden: A People's Passion" in A-230 Life Sciences Building.
Friday, Jan. 21
4-6 p.m.: The Office for International Students and Scholars hosts International Coffee Hour in Spartan Rooms B and C in the International Center. A movie about the development of the holiday will be shown.
Wednesday, Feb. 16
6-8 p.m.: The Eli Broad College of Business hosts the Black History Month Multicultural Heroes Hall of Fame Case Competition in N-100 Business College Complex.
Thursday, Feb. 17
6:30 p.m.: The Office of Diversity and Pluralism in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources will host the annual African American Heritage Month Celebration in the Union Gold A and B.
The Rev. C. T. Vivian will speak at the College of Osteopathic Medicine. "Black Power and the American Myth" discusses the struggle for human rights.
