Spartans kick into next round

Team faces No. 1 Indiana today in Big Ten tourney

November 12, 2004
Senior forward Jordan Gruber plows through Wisconsin player Aaron Hohlbein, gaining possession of the ball Thursday morning in Ann Arbor. MSU defeated Wisconsin, 1-0, and moves on to the next round of the Big Ten Tournament to play Indiana at 11:30 a.m. today, also in Ann Arbor.

Ann Arbor - After suffering a 2-1 setback to Wisconsin only two weeks earlier, the MSU men's soccer team had revenge on its mind when the Spartans defeated the Badgers in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday.

Now the Spartans (10-6-1) will look to No. 1 Indiana, the defending Big Ten Tournament champion, whom they have not defeated since 1965 - a streak of 32 games.

Against Wisconsin, MSU was backed by two saves from sophomore goalkeeper Jason Tillman and an early goal by junior midfielder Steve Doster, the Spartans advanced to the second round to face Indiana today at 11:30 a.m. via a 1-0 shutout win at U-M Soccer Field.

"This was huge," MSU head coach Joe Baum said. "It was a great team victory. The whole team was outstanding."

The lone goal came less than 25 minutes into the game when Doster took a feed from junior midfielder Ryan McMahen and headed the ball into the goal behind Wisconsin goalkeeper Eric Hanson.

"Ryan sent a great ball in," Doster said. "I got a step on the defender, got a little flick to it and the goalie didn't even see it coming. I snuck it in there and he didn't even react. It set the tone."

MSU applied pressure for the rest of the half, but was unable to score. Baum liked what he saw.

"Our first half was one of the best halves we've played all year," he said. "We did a nice job possessing, we stayed composed and created some great chances."

The game was played in cold, blustery conditions on a soft field. The players, though, did not mind the cold.

"It didn't bother us too much," Doster said. "The wind was the biggest factor because the ball would die."

MSU got a minor scare with 10 minutes left in the contest when senior defender Kellen Kalso was kicked and appeared hurt as he laid on the ground. He was able to shake it off and returned to the game after just a few seconds on the sidelines.

Wisconsin was able to control the ball inside the Spartans' end for the last few minutes, but was unable to garner a solid scoring opportunity as the Spartans defense stood firm.

"(For) as much pressure as they brought, though, they never got what I would call a supreme chance," Baum said. "Our keeper was steady, but Jay didn't have to do anything super-human. I thought it was good organized team defense."

Tillman only was required to stop two shots, but was kept on his heels throughout the whole game, robbing several Wisconsin players of quality chances.

"I had a real solid game," Tillman said. "I needed the shutout. I hadn't had one in a couple games.

"We executed great defensively."

The Spartans have shutout their opponent seven times this season. Thursday's shutout is the first in seven games, dating back to a 2-0 blanking of Loyola on Oct. 6

Baum was complimentary of his goalkeeper after the game.

"You could feel his presence today," Baum said. "He was talking, coming out of the goal, you could feel his presence and that's what we need from him and he stepped up big today."

Today, in the second round, MSU plays the top team in the country - Indiana.

The Hoosiers received a first-round bye and were awaiting the winner of this game. Like Wisconsin, Indiana is another team the Spartans lost to in the regular season, 3-1, on Sept. 26 at Old College Field. It will be a tough task for MSU against the defending national champions.

Last season, the two teams tied, which snapped MSU's 30-game losing streak, but kept the winless streak alive.

This time, the Spartans hope to turn the tables on their opponent again.

"I guarantee you, the Spartans will be motivated," Baum said. "Anything can happen now."
