Police briefs 11/30/04

A 22-year-old male student was the alleged victim of a robbery attempt on Sunday night, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.The student said he was walking north on Chestnut Road near Munn Ice Arena when a 28- or 29-year-old man approached him. The 6-foot-1 man had a medium build and was wearing a black leather coat, a black knit cap and dark pants, McGlothian-Taylor said. The student told police the man said, "Give me all your money." The victim said he responded that he didn't have money and he was on his way to an on-campus job.The man asked where he worked, and when the student answered, the man told the student to leave.The student told police he walked away quickly and did not look back. He allegedly saw no weapon, but the man had a hand in his pocket.McGlothian-Taylor declined to say where the student worked.• A 25-year-old university employee reported a $50 library book damaged early Monday morning, McGlothian-Taylor said.The woman said the book was discovered at around 2 a.m. while employees were making rounds in the Main Library. The book was found thrown on the floor in the second floor of the east wing with its cover torn off and the spine broken.Police have no suspects.• An 18-year-old female Butterfield Hall resident reported $25 in damage done to her dorm room door during Thanksgiving break, McGlothian-Taylor said.The student told police that between Wednesday afternoon and Sunday afternoon, an unknown suspect damaged and removed her dry-erase board, shattered the glass in the door's peephole and scraped paint off the doorjamb.The student told police she had problems earlier in the year with hallmates who accused her of writing comments on their dry-erase boards, but when officers interviewed the students, they were all home for the weekend, as well.The matter will be handled by Residence Life staff, McGlothian-Taylor said.Shannon Houghton
