ASMSU voters pick incumbents

ASMSU re-elected two vice chairpersons in charge of its funding and programming boards on Thursday.

Incumbents Jason Bucholz and Kristen Daddow kept their seats on each respective board, although the vote total is unknown because ASMSU's general assembly closed its meeting to the public during debate about the vice chairperson candidates.

ASMSU can close a meeting to the public with a two-thirds vote.

The funding board provides money for registered student organizations like sports clubs and student governing groups.

Bucholz said last year when he was elected to the position, he didn't expect so much competition between student organizations for funds.

"All (registered student organizations) are looking out for themselves, not anything else," he said.

He said he had to extend his office hours to meet with all student organizations asking for money.

The vice chairpersons for both the funding and programming board have the power to put a hold on any funds passed by the board.

Programming board is a compilation of student representatives that plan and promote events such as concerts and speeches for students. The board hosted the Ben Kweller concert on Thursday and has plans to bring the band Motion City Soundtrack to Erickson Hall Kiva on Nov. 19.

"ASMSU programming board puts on events for students to show what ASMSU does for them," Daddow said.

It's the role of the programming board to see how student tax money is spent, she said. Daddow added this year fiscal responsibility within the board has become an issue because of overspending in previous years.

ASMSU Student Assembly Chairperson Andrew Schepers said it can be a daunting task for new vice chairpersons to get involved halfway through the semester with either board. But he said he'd support the assembly's decision on the vice chairperson positions.

"This keeps our feet on the ground and running," he said. "Bringing in a new individual can leave a grace period where things can get slowed down. We'd have to orientate them into the respective boards then get them going."
