A mechanical contractor reported an accidental fire at IM Sports-West Thursday morning, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. The contractor told police he was welding a pipe in a work area on the first floor when sparks dropped through the hole into the basement. The sparks caused material to catch fire, and both the contractor and a second worker downstairs used fire extinguishers to put out the fire.Because there was smoke, the contractor pulled the fire alarm and the East Lansing Fire Department responded. Fire officials said the fire was out on arrival, and they cleared the building of smoke.McGlothian-Taylor said there was minor damage to equipment, charred walls and no injuries. The MSU Fire Department answered a false fire alarm in Shaw Hall on Thursday afternoon. The kitchen cooks were preparing food for dinner Thursday on the charbroiler when a piece of the duct that guides the smoke outside popped off, Shaw Hall Manager Carol Noud said. As a result, smoke entered the mechanical room on the second floor of Shaw and set off fire alarms, Noud said. After residents, staff members and students eating lunch exited the building, the fire department arrived to secure the scene. The mechanical room was empty at the time of the incident and no injuries were reported, Noud said.
