Feast & feat

The slight, 5-foot-2-inch East Lansing resident accomplished what countless burly football players could not.

Patrice Marietta completed The Parlour on Campus' Dare to be Great Challenge. Contestants must eat 21 scoops of ice cream, loaded with about one pound of toppings in an hour. Marietta finished her melting meal with four minutes left on June 16.

"I had five scoops of orange sherbet, and the rest was vanilla," Marietta said. "I couldn't feel my face when I was done. I kept a glass of hot water next to me to dip my tongue in while I was eating because it would go numb."

She did feel the effects of too much ice cream ingestion immediately afterward, she said.

"I threw up after I left," Marietta said. "I was so cold. My hands and face were blue. An hour later, I was still shivering."

Marietta said the ordeal did not affect her love of ice cream, which she ate the next night. She won free food for the rest of the week, as well as a plaque in the restaurant, the only one under the heading "Successes."
