A man was seen attempting to break into a room at Giltner Hall on Wednesday, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.A 27-year-old male employee told police he was walking down the hallway when he noticed the man poke his head from the doorway and then run down the stairs.The employee attempted to run after the man but lost track of him.The employee also noticed the hinges to the door were missing, and the door was slightly ajar.Police are investigating. The East Lansing fire department responded to a small fire in Bryan Hall on Wednesday, McGlothian-Taylor said.Officers said a stick of incense left unattended started the fire, which burned two towels in a laundry basket. Nothing else in the room was damaged.The occupant of the room and a visitor were not present at the time of the fire and came back to the room a short while later when the officers were still there.The resident said he thought he had snuffed out the incense stick before leaving the room.An MSU police officer also arrived on the scene and arrested an occupant of the room, a 19-year-old male student, for possession of marijuana. The case has been forwarded to the Ingham County prosecutor.
