Kobs Korner

With spring comes baseball, with baseball comes fans, with fans comes Kobs Korner

There is the Izzone, Slapshots, Corner Blitz and now a new kid on the block of the MSU cheering sections - Kobs Korner.

Kobs Korner is the beloved student section of the MSU baseball team (14-10). An MSU baseball team that is 10-0 at home this season, courtesy of a little help from the Korner.

"It's been fantastic," MSU head coach Ted Mahan said. "I think it's helping our kids and we hope it grows."

This is not your typical student section. It's not run by the Student Alumni Foundation, you don't have to pay to be in it and you don't have to sign up for it months in advance. All a person has to do to be in Kobs Korner is simple: show up to Kobs Field and heckle the opposing team all game long.

SAF does know about Kobs Korner and is aware of the excitement its members are creating. Marketing freshman Garett Wray, a founder of the group, said they were contacted by SAF once, but haven't talked about the future of Kobs Korner just yet.

Wray doesn't want to make this something people who join have to pay for, such as the Izzone or the other student sections, but he does want Kobs Korner to be similar to the more popularized cheering groups.

"We have six of the players on our floor and they came back from away games and said they were getting heckled," Wray said. "They wanted us to come out and heckle the other teams.

"We came out, enjoyed it, picked up more people and decided to start a cheering section. We want to be like the Izzone and Corner Blitz and make (Kobs Korner) big."

Wray and his roommate, engineering freshman Billy Nietert, began the group on their own and say that everyone is welcome. The two are suitemates of freshman shortstop Troy Krider and freshman left-handed pitcher Spencer Hahn in West Wilson Hall.

Of the 10 true freshmen, six of them live on the floor with Wray and Nietert. In fact, nearly all of the people who come out to stand in Kobs Korner are from Wilson Hall. One of the players who lives on the floor, freshman pitcher Craig Brookes, appreciates the efforts of all the people who come out.

"For the most part, they all live on our floor in West Wilson," Brooks said. "We've been talking to them all year and they took it upon themselves to come out, we didn't force them to, and they've been great."

The two founders of Kobs Korner said on a good day the group can have upwards of 35 or so people or as few as 10 people on a cold and/or rainy day. Regardless of conditions, the two just want people to come out and support the team.

Whether it's 10 people or 35, the group already is making a name for itself, especially with the Spartans' opponents.

"I liked "K-time" and some of the other chants," Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne manager Billy Gernon said. "I'd like to have that group at my field - I'll tell you that much."

IPFW lost to the Spartans, 12-1, on Wednesday. Wray and Nietert said they just want to have fun and irritate the other team - and the MSU players love it.

"It feels good to have someone out there cheering for you," Brookes said. "It's good to have some of my friends cheering for you."

For their contributions, Mahan agreed to purchase T-shirts for the group as a thank-you for what they are doing for the MSU baseball program.

Wray and Nietert admitted to not being huge baseball fans before this year, but are bound by friendships with the players.

"We hang out with them every weekend," freshman catcher Sean Walker said. "They're just our friends."
