New employees promote ASMSU activity

David Whitehurst and Joe Obringer haven't had a lot of time to sit around since arriving at ASMSU two weeks ago.

After months of delays, ASMSU's Web site soon will be updated. On Thursday, students came together at an ASMSU forum with Provost Lou Anna Simon.

Both happened in part because of work by the new employees.

Whitehurst, the new director of constituent activism, and Obringer, the new director of digital and graphic marketing, were hired to replace officials who resigned before the spring semester began.

Hirings generally take place before the semester begins.

The director of constituent activism is a position created last year intended to provide a link between students and to understand their needs.

Whitehurst, an interdisciplinary studies in social science senior, said his first priority was getting the word out on Simon's forum, during which members of the campus community were able to ask questions on her plan for the liberal arts reorganization.

"I want to keep a finger on the pulse of the campus and let them know what we are doing for them," he said. "I want to just make people see this is one of the most underutilized avenues for students - the office should be packed."

The director of digital and graphic marketing reaches students through their computers by maintaining the organization's Web site and producing other visual media.

"My first priority is to get the elections Web site up and running," Obringer, a communication junior, said. This year, the site will have information on candidates and the organization, he said.

Elected positions are handled directly through Student Assembly and Academic Assembly.

Positions for next session were posted Monday, and applications for elected positions currently are available in Room 307 of Student Services.
