Jucifer EP really, really, loud

March 16, 2004

Few factors can make a band immediately amazing.

One of them is when the drummer rocks so hard that he or she starts to bleed (see www.jucifer.com). Or when flange and distortion are used simultaneously (Flange, noun: Fuzzy, spacey guitar effect that sounds cool). Another is when the lyrics are so good, you skip backward on the CD just to hear them over again.

Thus is Jucifer's new six-song (plus bonus track) release, "War Bird."

Jucifer is a really, really loud rock band. Its music is rich with dark power chords and heavy drumbeats. The two-piece band, made up of boyfriend/girlfriend duo Edgar Livengood and Amber Valentine, uses loud distorted guitar that is reminiscent of Veruca Salt's earlier, heavier "Shimmer Like a Girl" and "25." Valentine's voice is sweet, seductive and slightly evil. The band is hard-core, drawing upon metal, grunge and basics of rock 'n' roll. But the band does more than make noise.

"My Stars" features old-school, slightly out-of-tune dobro sounds and isn't metal or punk at all. It's more blues-rock than anything else, but it's a far cry from any recordings of that genre. This song showcases Valentine's beautiful voice and Jucifer's amazing lyrical talents.

Jucifer is truly a badass band with serious talent. The music is just as entrancing as the name.

Suggested listening: Really, really loud.
