Assault suspect arraigned

March 5, 2004

A man whom police believe was involved in assaulting an MSU student in Hubbard Hall was arraigned Thursday in East Lansing 54-B District Court.

Flint resident Jeremy Nathaniel Jackson, 24, was charged with misdemeanor aggravated assault and given a $1,000 personal recognizance bond, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. A pretrial has been scheduled for March 10.

Jackson and another nonresident are accused of assaulting the student around 2 a.m. Feb. 22 on the seventh floor of North Hubbard, McGlothian-Taylor said.

Taylor said she was unsure if Jackson is an MSU student. He is listed in the MSU directory, but the registrar's office said he is not enrolled.

McGlothian-Taylor said police still are searching for the other man involved in the incident.

The student told police that, on the night of the attack, he was walking in the hallway near his room when he noticed two men who appeared to be lost. When he asked if they needed help, the two men replied with profanities, the police report stated.

After the student replied back with a profanity, the two men began hitting him in the head and face with a closed fist. Police said both attackers fled the scene before officers arrived.

Kelly High McCord, complex director for Akers and Hubbard halls, said floor meetings were held to discuss safety issues.

McCord said there was no blood on the walls and floor following the incident, as a floor resident had reported.

Because the incident occurred after midnight, there were concerns for safety during the night hours.

She said even if the men had been signed in properly, the residents responsible for them needed to be held accountable for their whereabouts in the dorm.

"You can't sign them in and just let them go through the building," she said.
