ASMSU might join new national organization

MSU might take steps to become a charter member of the new American Student Government Association after ASMSU's Academic Assembly meets tonight.

The American Student Government Association is a national organization centered in Gainesville, Fla. and calls itself an information, research and networking resource for leaders and advisers. MSU's undergraduate student government is currently a member of the Association of Michigan Universities.

"It's always important to have regional associations with our peers, but it's also important to have it on a national level," said Bruce Serven, representative for the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, who is making the presentation. Serven is also presenting a resolution that would form the ASMSU Audit Committee, which would evaluate services ASMSU provides to students, such as legal services and blue books.

"If we're spending almost $400,000 a year to retain an attorney and find that only 20 students use it, why not put the money toward where more students would use it?" he said. "They deserve the services so they get the most bang for their buck."
