Icers Halloween treat: 2 victories

October 31, 2003
MSU junior center Ash Goldie, right, knocks the puck away from Western Michigan center Vince Bellissimo during Friday night's game at Munn Ice Arena. Goldie gave the Spartans a 3-2 lead after scoring a powerplay goal during the third period. The Spartans won 4-2.

The MSU hockey team wants to be a winning team for Halloween.

Only two wins will grant the Spartans that treat.

That feat can happen this weekend, as the Spartans (3-3 overall, 2-2 CCHA) play a home-and-home series against Ferris State (2-4-0, 1-3-0). Friday's contest at Munn Ice Arena faces off at 8:05 p.m. and will be televised on College Sports Television. Saturday's game at Ewigleben Arena will be played at 7:05 p.m.

"We're taking it one step at a time and we want to get over that .500 mark and get on a roll and get going," MSU junior captain Jim Slater said.

The Spartans are riding off the momentum of the year's first series sweep of Western Michigan and their ability to find goal-scoring options from six different players last weekend. Slater said the awakening of the Spartans' powerful scoring unit will serve well, and if the trend continues, multiple goal-scoring threats will be a key factor in the Spartans' success.

"The biggest thing on our team is probably our forwards with their offensive talent," Slater said. "You know the first couple games we weren't showing that, but last week we put up some big numbers with different guys, and we want to carry that over to this weekend and even further."

Getting over the hump might come the Spartans' way. Practice has taken a turn since an upset loss to Findlay started the season. The attitude has become more upbeat, with players communicating more effectively and skating harder. Freshman defenseman A.J. Thelen said that has changed the outlook the Spartans have heading into each weekend.

"I hope we keep winning, because practice is great," Thelen said. "Everybody's happy, everybody's loose, and we're ready to play."

And MSU head coach Rick Comley has seen a change in the teams' hunger, too.

"Winning does amazing things for you in terms of your psyche," Comley said.
