Icers blank Windsor 6-0 in exhibition game

October 6, 2003
Sophomore forward Nenad Gajic passes the puck past junior defenseman Tim Mayer Thursday evening during the Green and White game at Munn Ice Arena. Gajic had a total of 12 points last season.

It took two of three periods for the MSU hockey team to defeat the University of Windsor 6-0 in Sunday's afternoon skate.

"I'm happy that we got a chance to play in a competitive situation," MSU head coach Rick Comley said. "One thing about playing exhibition games like this is that they're better than intrasquad games, but they're not as good as the regular season.

"You've got to be very careful not to read too much into it or too much out of it. It gives everybody a chance to put the jersey on and have some people in the stands with a game-type atmosphere."

The exhibition game was pretty much decided in the first period at the stick of freshman forward Tommy Goebel, who was credited with a hat trick after scoring the Spartans' first three goals. Sophomore defeseman Corey Potter chimed in on Goebel's period with a goal of his own off an assist from junior forward Ash Goldie, giving the Spartans a 4-0 cushion heading into the second period.

Goebel was chalked into the team's No. 1 scoring line after Thursday's Green and White game. The move served as a reunion for Goebel with junior captain Jim Slater, who both played junior hockey for the Cleveland Barons of the NAHL. Goebel is expected to play on the No. 1 line next weekend in the Ice Breaker Tournament against Findlay, but Comley still has confidence with sophomore forward David Booth running the left wing.

"He's a very gifted player," Comley said of Goebel. "I have to decide where I want to play him."

The first period - where the game was ultimately decided - was paced when Goebel placed a slapshot off the back heel of Windsor goaltender Jay Ewasiuk off assists from junior forward Mike Lalonde and Slater in the ninth minute. The same assisters set up Goebel's 13th minute goal, as he tapped in the puck in front of the net.

Goebel's final tally of the day was his most exciting. In a heads-up move, with the puck laying motionless behind Murray near the goal line, Goebel skated in hard to tap in the short-handed goal to go up 3-0.

"I didn't know what was going on," said Goebel, who claims to be more of a passer than a scorer. "I saw the puck lying there the whole time and I guess nobody else saw it. It was just sitting there, so I did a lap around the zone and ended up tapping it in."

After a quiet second period, the Spartans again brought out the fire power in the third, netting two goals from junior forwards Kevin Estrada and Slater, respectively. Junior forwards Brock Radunske and Goldie registered assists on Estrada's goal, while Lalonde and freshman defenseman Ethan Graham assisted in Slater's score.

The Spartans outshot the Lancers 50-11.

As promised by Comley, junior goaltender Matt Migliaccio and freshman goaltender Dominic Vicari shared time in the net, with each playing about one and a half periods in the combined shutout effort.

"We work well together so far," Migliaccio said. "It was one of those games where you kind of get out of your rhythm because you didn't have a lot of work and we were looking for things to do in the net.

"But it was good. We did fine and kept the zero on the board like we're supposed to."
