ASMSU evaluates officers

October 23, 2003

After several delays in the completion of ASMSU's Web site, ASMSU discussed the elimination of two officials Tuesday night.

Members of MSU's undergraduate student government debated the performance of Association Director Vikas Menon and Director of Digital and Graphic Media Nitin Pereira, because the organization's Web page still was not completed after both were paid for the work.

A bill introduced by James Madison representative Adam Raezler gave Menon and Pereira a Nov. 3 deadline to have the Web page fully functioning and updated or the directors would be relieved of their positions within ASMSU.

The Web page currently displays outdated staff information and announcements for meetings that occurred seven months ago.

Academic Assembly Internal Vice-Chairperson Tom Morse said an original deadline for the completion of the Web page was not set by the organization's officials.

During the meeting, Raezler said he expressed "pure dissatisfaction" with the current state of the Web page.

Neel Agrawal, director of constituent activism, said a decision was made to keep the outdated Web page up to allow students and faculty access to descriptions of ASMSU services.

At the meeting, Menon said technical difficulties occurred while fixing the network location of the site, which delayed the completion of the Web page.

It would have cost $8,000 to have a professional fix the network, Menon said to the assembly, but it only would cost $3,000 for him to fix it.

Menon said his job entailed both fixing the network as well as completely redesigning the Web page, not just updating it.

"This is not a matter of maintaining," Menon said at the meeting. "We want a fully functioning Web page with our own server."

But Raezler said it was more important to work on completing the Web page, not the network.

"Students don't see the network; they see an outdated Web page," Raezler said at the meeting. "The network can be fixed later, but the job has to be finished now."

The bill stated the current Web page does not provide up-to-date information on representatives or bills that have passed the assemblies.

Menon said he guarantees the Web page will be done within the next two weeks, and he has no objection to showing the progress made on the Web page.

Neither Pereira nor Menon could be reached for comment.

Pereira and Menon can't be fired before going through the MSU Human Resources disciplinary action processes.

The four-step disciplinary action process begins with a verbal warning to an employee, followed by a written reprimand, suspension and, finally, termination of employment.

A motion to issue a formal warning to the director of digital and graphic media was carried, and the bill itself was tabled indefinitely and can't be brought back to the assembly.
