While some MSU students sat poolside at the IM West swimming pool Friday night, Kelsey Onkka didn't let the crisp, cool breeze stop her from diving in.
"I was scared it was going to be cold," the zoology freshman said.
About 100 MSU students gathered at IM Sports-West for the annual Universities Activity Board Dive-In Movie.
With neon beach towels covering the prickly green grass, students picnicked and talked amongst themselves waiting for the sun to set and the much-anticipated film "How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days" to begin.
Onkka, the first one in the pool, said she and her friends wanted others to join them.
"We are trying to encourage others to swim with us," she said. "It's relaxing."
Dressed in a one-piece, red-and-white bathing suit, Onkka waded in the water as she watched the film on a projection screen.
"Now I can tell people I watched a movie from the pool," she said. "This is one of the many unique opportunities MSU provides to its students."
Event coordinator Sveta Desai said she was pleased with the turnout.
"This brings MSU students together in a safe and friendly environment," the supply chain management junior said. She said it is a great opportunity to meet new friends.
Desai said she picked movies she thought would be appealing to everyone.
"I wanted to have a contrast of movies," she said.
"How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days" and "The Ring" were the chosen movies for the evening.
Veterinary medicine freshman Clark Llamzon said he couldn't think of a better way to spend his Friday night.
"This is an ingenious idea," he said. "I never would have come up with this."
Llamzon, dressed in solid red swim trunks accented by a blue horizontal stripe, said he didn't have to worry about things getting out of control.
"This is a great opportunity to party without partying," he said.
