Women's soccer looks for win against Furman; men hoping for 3

Junior forward Tiffany Laskowski challenges Oakland goalkeeper Sarah Buckland on Sunday at Old College Field.

Old College Field will be busy this weekend as both the men's and women's soccer teams host opponents on the banks of the Red Cedar for their first contests of the regular season.

Last week, the teams played in exhibition games with the men's squad tying Rutgers 1-1 and defeating Kentucky 2-0 in the IPFW Soccer Showcase in Fort Wayne, Ind. The women tied No. 11 Virginia 1-1 at home.

The women start the weekend at 4 p.m. Friday against Furman. The men host the MSU/Radisson Fall Classic against Xavier at noon on Sunday and then return to Old College Field for a noon match against Loyola Marymount Monday. The MSU/Radisson Fall Classic marks the fourth consecutive tournament on campus and has allowed MSU to play top-level opponents to jump-start their season. Joe Baum, men's soccer head coach, said a few seasons ago, before Radisson became a sponsor, that the level of opponents was very different than the teams competing this weekend.

"These are the first two regular-season games, and it's important that the team get off to a good start," Baum said. "It's not like we're bringing in Little Sister of the Poor."

Baum said he's excited for his team to hit the field again because despite beating Kentucky, who defeated No. 7 Indiana 2-1, there were a couple kinks in their game.

"Number one, our passing game wasn't well," he said. "And we didn't do a good job of switching the field."

After their 1-1 tie with Virginia last week, MSU women's soccer head coach Tom Saxton said his team would work on its offense and stamina after being outshot by the Cavaliers 27-3. The last time these two teams met in Greenville, S.C., last season, MSU left with a 1-0 loss.
