Shooter arraigned in E.L.

Identity of driver, second suspect still

A Lansing resident was arraigned last week for the shooting of an East Lansing resident over a PlayStation game console.

Nathen Brown was arraigned on July 7 in East Lansing's 54-B District Court on one count of armed robbery and is being charged as a habitual offender for the shooting of a 20-year-old East Lansing resident that occurred on the 500 block of Park Lane on June 26.

Brown is being held at the Ingham County Jail.

East Lansing police Capt. Juli Liebler said because Brown has two previous felony offenses he is being charged as a habitual offender and could serve up to a life sentence.

Brown's previous record includes dangerous assault with a weapon in 2000 and 2002.

Police said the 20-year-old who was shot reported he was meeting Brown at his residence to discuss the purchase of a PlayStation video game console. After Brown looked at the equipment, he told the man he would need to get some money before making the purchase.

Brown returned with a second suspect and demanded money from the victim. He then wrestled with the victim and shot him in the thigh. Brown and the other suspect fled the scene in a light blue Escort driven by a female.

The 20-year-old was treated for injuries and released from the hospital later the same night.

Residents living near the man's home said about eight police officers arrived two hours later after he was shot.

Jessica Hohn, communications junior, said the officers quickly raided the house.

"(The police) had shotguns," she said, "but no one was home when they came. They had crime scene tape around the house while they searched it."

The residence is a white two-story townhouse now vacant and being remodeled. The 20-year-old and the two other males who lived there were subleasing for the summer. Two other roommates had moved out a week prior to the shooting.

The owner of the home, who did not want to be identified, said the victim had only lived in the house three weeks and moved out the day he was shot.

Hohn and other residents living nearby said they thought the shooting probably had to do with more than a PlayStation.

"Not a PlayStation," Hohn said. "Who shoots people over a PlayStation?"

Liebler said the officers received information on Brown through an anonymous tip and no information regarding the other suspect had been found.

East Lansing police responded to a second shooting that same day at Poppa Leo's Pizza, 515 W. Grand River Ave. Police say Lansing resident John Farley entered Poppa Leo's and shot a Lansing man in the neck.

This was the second time this year two shootings occurred in East Lansing on the same day. The first was on March 21 when a 21-year-old male was shot in the chest at the Woodbrook Village Apartments, 1705 Coolidge Road. The second shooting happened during a attempted robbery later in the day but no one was hit.
