MSU's attempt to set a world record in basketball attendance is shaping up into a reality as ticket sales for "The BasketBowl" have now topped 50,000.
On Saturday, MSU ticket manager Chris Besanceney reported that 50,172 tickets have been sold for the Kentucky-MSU basketball game at Ford Field in Detroit on Dec. 13.
Ticket sales since the May 29 announcement have been available only to donors and season-ticket holders. Tickets will go on sale to the general public July 8, being exclusively sold through the Ford Field Ticket Office.
The 19,028 remaining tickets are priced at $8, $12 and $14.
"I'm ecstatic with the response from our fans," MSU head basketball coach Tom Izzo said in a statement. "Our fans have welcomed this Ford Field event with open arms. I'm thrilled that there's so much interest in a basketball game that is still almost six months away."
"The BasketBowl" would be the second time that MSU is part of a world record crowd for watching a sporting event. "The Cold War" set the world-record hockey attendance on Oct. 6, 2001 when 74,554 attended the MSU-Michigan outdoor hockey game at Spartan Stadium.
