The autopsy performed on an MSU student found dead Sunday showed no signs of foul play, the county medical examiner said Monday.
City and county officials continued Monday to investigate the death of John Cornelius Eckhold III, a 23-year-old psychology senior, who was found dead by his father at his East Lansing apartment.
His father, who is from Midland, went to check on his son after he didn't hear from him for several days. Eckhold lived at Woodside Apartments, on the corner of Haslett Road and Woodside Drive.
Officials now await results of a toxicology report, which should shed light on the cause of death. The results could be announced by the end of the week.
Results will show if any drugs were in the student's body and will report his blood alcohol level.
"There's no way for us looking at a body to say there was anything toxic in the system," said Dr. Dennis Jurczak, Ingham County's chief medical examiner, adding no fatal wounds were found.
"At this point the autopsy was inconclusive and we're just waiting on blood and tissue analysis," he said.
Neighbors last reported seeing Eckhold alive at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. There are no suspects, but police are hoping witnesses will come forward.
East Lansing police officers called Michigan State Police for assistance Sunday morning for crime analysis.
Michigan State Police Lt. Jerry Conners said officers are no longer searching the apartment, and it's unlikely they will return.
East Lansing police Capt. Juli Liebler said officers found Eckhold's apartment in disarray.
A friend, who told police he was the last person to see the student, said Eckhold was upset and responsible for the disorder in his ground-level apartment.
Police originally classified the death "suspicious" because of the room's condition. There also were no signs of forced entry, and Eckhold didn't have a roommate.
Liebler said police haven't ruled out any situation - including foul play, a natural death or a substance overdose.
"We certainly don't want to have someone who's committed a crime like that running around, but we don't have anything that is conclusive at this point," Liebler said.
Last month, two shootings took place in East Lansing on the same day. In one case, a 21-year-old male nonstudent was shot in the chest at Woodbrook Village Apartments on Coolidge Road. In the other, a shot was fired at a man on the 1700 block of Haslett Road in an attempted robbery.
Earlier this semester, three MSU students were assaulted at gunpoint in their Lansing apartment.
