'U' to up parking fees

The short walk from the car to the dorm will cost students parking near the Brody Complex and Owen Hall an extra $33 next year.

The All-University Traffic Committee has finalized parking fees for the next academic year.

The changes include a 23 percent increase in the price of a parking permit for the Brody Complex and Owen Hall. The price of the permit will now be $142.

"It's pretty much based on privilege," said Andrew Schepers, student representative for the committee. "They're paying for the privilege to park right by their front door."

Schepers holds the seat as a member of ASMSU's Student Assembly. MSU's undergraduate student government has two seats on the committee.

The increase in price for the two locations will probably not deter students from purchasing permits, Schepers said.

"It's premier parking for the people that live there," he said, adding Brody residents can still park in Lot 75, on Kalamazoo Street lot near the Michigan State Police headquarters.

Mathematics junior Heather Magoulick, a Yakeley Hall resident who parks in the Brody Complex area, said even though she's moving off campus, she would pay the fee next year.

"It's ridiculous, but I would like to have a car up here," she said. "The parking lot's not any nicer than it was two years ago before they raised the price."

But she said the price increase wouldn't bother her.

"I pay it once a year and don't really think about it," she said. "It's worth it to have a car."

But political science and pre-law senior Kandi Seelbinder said the $109 she currently pays to park her car in the Brody Complex isn't worth it.

"It's already way more expensive than in other places," she said, adding that she won't have to pay the increase next year because she plans to move off campus.

Seelbinder said she wouldn't pay the increase, anyway.

The committee decided not to change meter and disabled parking fines for next year. The costs will still be $15 for meter and $100 for disabled parking for each violation.

Fines for parking spaces reserved for people with disabilities are state mandated.

Tyler Gill, ASMSU Student Assembly representative for the Council of Students with Disabilities, said higher fines might deter students from illegally using the spaces.

"Eventually they will get caught," he said.

Schepers said the committee recommended university officials lobby the state to increase the fines.

Students parking in lots 75, 83 and 91, near Breslin Center, South Complex and Fee Hall will have to pay $95 to park - an increase of $2.
