Hockey team awaits fate, Michigan wins CCHA

The Spartan hockey team's hopes to continue post season play appear to be fading.

The team will find out for certain Sunday at 6 p.m. when ESPN hosts NCAA Tournament Selection Show. The time and network was changed due to war and NCAA men's basketball coverage.

If the Spartans are left out, it will be the first time since 1993 they failed qualify for the tournament. Senior forward Brain Maloney characterized the team's chances as "slim."

"I think we needed to win that game," Maloney said of Thursday's loss to Northern Michigan. "I think that's going to end up being the final game for us, but I had a lot of fun doing it.

"It's just going to take me some time to swallow that down."

Michigan won the Mason Cup and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament by knocking off regular season CCHA champion Ferris State, 5-3, at Joe Louis Arena in the Super Six championship game.

CCHA Super Six results:

Saturday:

Championship game: Michigan 5, Ferris State 3

Third Place: Northern Michigan 4, Ohio State 1

Friday:

Michigan 3, Ohio State 0

Ferris State 4, Northern Michigan 2
