Girls 'make' Lansing band

MTV to feature 2 members of local group on show

Bassist Tony Hernandez and drummer Andrew Ash are members of the Lansing band Hyperbole. the two were chosen to represent the band on aan MTV reality game show hosted by Mandy Moore called "Girl Makes Band."

MTV has its hands full this week, but the recording of "Spring Break 2003" is only part of the reason.

Lansing's own sarcastic, hell-raising teenage group Hyperbole, which is notorious for flashing truck drivers, harassing businesses with backdoor bells and starting hotel wrestling matches, will have two of its members take the stage in the all out, game-show-meets-reality series "Girl Makes Band."

Drummer Andrew Ash and bass player Tony Hernandez will be controlled by three female contestants who try and make the best sounding band for their chance at an all-expenses-paid vacation.

Ash and Hernandez each get $750, a hotel room and a plane ride to South Beach, Miami.

The network has not yet announced a date for the show to be aired.

As far as what the two will be doing besides playing music is anyone's guess, including their own.

"All I know is there are 12 guys and three girls who are trying to make the best band," Hernandez said. "Other than that we'll just find out when we get there."

Ash and Hernandez do know they will be in wardrobe with clothing preselected by the show and that they will be playing three songs that also were selected without their knowledge.

"We get to play cover songs," he said.

"I think it's Nelly's 'Hot in Herre,' Justin Timberlake's 'Cry Me a River' and some Good Charlotte."

Although most of the members are fresh out of high school, the group - which formed in the eighth grade - already has signed with local indie label AFR and just returned from a two-month tour of California during which MTV asked them to appear on the show.

"These guys get a huge draw at shows, their fan base is pretty impressive," manager Dave Collins said.

"An average show is filled with about 200 people and our largest has been about 750."

Although the duo isn't nervous, the group hopes their representatives' time on the show won't be in vain.

"We already had our 15 minutes of fame," lead singer Landon Sheely said. "We had that when we were on The Edge's local show 15 Minutes of Fame.

"We're going for 30 now and before it's all said and done we are hoping for 45."
