Air raid sirens sounded in Baghdad and the anti-aircraft guns fired shortly after 9:30 p.m. eastern time.
The word from the White House via spokesman Ari Fleischer was that "The opening stages of the disarmament of the Iraqi regime have begun."
President George W. Bush is expected to address the nation at 10:15 p.m.
