Depending on the outcome of an experimental Saturday night show, East Lansing could see another music venue added to its list of entertainment options.
Five Forty-Seven, 547 E. Grand River Ave., is planning its first open-to-the-public show, featuring indie-rock, emo and punk bands Calling All Heroes, Subrosia, Lisboa and Leper Colony. The venue is between Bailey and Division streets.
"This is our first show, a tryout, because we've never done something like this," said Tom Wyatt, venue manager and member of Subrosia. "We want to provide an all-ages alternative to the East Lansing party scene where people could hear lesser-known music."
Five Forty-Seven isn't new to East Lansing. The building has previously been used as a meeting place for Campus Crusade for Christ, which owns the property and is sponsoring the event.
Campus Crusade for Christ members said possible qualms about religious rock shouldn't stop people from having a good time.
"We're all Christians but not necessarily a Christian band," Wyatt said of Christian rock stereotypes. "What you find in the independent scene is different than the mainstream. These bands sound hard, but they don't really use any vulgarities or obscenities - it's just poetry with music put to it."
Wyatt said he's hopeful for Saturday's show, the turnout of which likely will determine the frequency of future shows.
"After this show we're going to evaluate how it went and see if there were any problems - then we'll probably have more shows," he said.
Robin Langford, assistant director of Campus Crusade for Christ, said the group has been using the location since 1999 for meetings, games, prayer and local music.
"There's about 100 people every Thursday night who go and hang out there when it's open, but throughout the week we have different meetings there," she said.
Langford said the idea of opening the venue to the public came from students.
"Our students are totally running with this. I don't really have much to do with it," she said.
Saturday's show has a $5 cover charge, which will compensate the bands and be used to pay rent and maintaining the venue.
