ASMSU fills void with experience

Ahmed Baset's career path has led him from internships in Washington, D.C. to the offices of ASMSU, MSU's undergraduate student government.

As the new director of legislative affairs for the organization, Baset is in charge of lobbying on behalf of MSU students on the local, state and federal levels.

"Any way I can further the process toward Michigan State students, that's what I do," he said.

Baset, an international relations junior, said his dedication to politics began in his childhood, much to his mother's despair.

"My mom wanted me to be a doctor, and I didn't think that was going to happen," Baset said.

Jump to Washington several years later and Baset's mother is no longer disappointed in her son's passion.

Baset worked for then-state Sen. Thaddeus McCotter, R-Livonia, where he gained insight into how a legislative office works. McCotter was elected to Congress in November.

Louis Brown, external affairs vice chairperson for Student Assembly, said Baset's modesty about his accomplishments make him an ideal leader within the student government.

"He doesn't take himself too seriously," Brown said. "He's willing to put the time and effort to come to the students."

Baset's tasks include reviewing current political issues, going to the Capitol and writing letters to legislative officials.

Another student works with Baset in analyzing political issues relevant to students, but he doesn't see it as a boss-employee relationship.

"I have a staff," he joked. "It's kind of weird to have a staff."

But when it comes to representing the student body, Baset takes his responsibilities seriously.

"I'm willing to listen to anyone who wants to talk to me, whether it be students, graduate students or the lunch lady," he said.

Baset said his main goal is to make sure people know there is someone in the organization's office that will make sure their voice is heard.

Matt Weingarden, student assembly chairperson said Baset's ability to mix with legislators and students will help him get the job done.

"He has the energy to bring back grass-roots lobbying and at-the-table lobbying," Weingarden said.
