For MSU, the Wolverines can be a thorn in the side for any sport, especially field hockey.
Last year, Michigan defeated the Spartans 2-1 in overtime in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to squash MSUs championship run.
Friday, a school record 10-game winning streak came to an end as the No. 5 Spartans (11-2 overall, 1-1 Big Ten) dropped a 1-0 decision to the No. 2 Wolverines (10-1, 2-0).
The game was evenly matched throughout, with Michigan holding a 10-9 shot advantage at the end of regulation.
One extra shot proved to be the key, as the lone strike of the match came from Wolverine forward Molly Powers. Powers shot hooked into the net at 59:34 into the game.
The loss not only marked the end of MSUs 10-game winning streak, but also extended Michigans victory run to nine.
The Spartan squad rebounded on Sunday to defeat Ohio 4-1. Three different MSU players shared scoring honors before halftime including senior midfielder Cynthia Martin, sophomore back Judith van Haeringen and sophomore forward Michelle Carstens.
Ten minutes into the second half, sophomore midfielder Annebet Beerman had an unassisted strike to put MSU up by four. Beermans goal was her 13th of the year, good enough to place her at the top of both the team and the nation in scoring.
Bobcat forward Lindsay Rothenberger spoiled the Spartans shutout at 48:12 in the match, but the strike was the final of the game and MSU rolled to victory with a three-goal lead.
Freshman Christina Kirkaldy and junior Lauren Hess shared time between the posts for the Spartans, earning three saves for the game.
With the loss, the Bobcats move to 4-6 on the season.
MSUs next game is Saturday against Indiana (3-8, 1-1), marking the beginning of a five-game homestand. Faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Ralph Young Field.
